Obituary of Katherine E. Schmutz

Katherine E. Schmutz, age 95, formerly of Caroga Lake, passed away on Monday January 25, 2010 at Mountain Valley Hospice in Gloversville. She was born in Johnstown, NY on December 25, 1914 the daughter of the late George and Maude Crowder Webb. On September 20, 1940 Katherine married Michael Schmutz; they shared 41 years together, until his passing on January 5, 1982. Katherine was a member of the North Bush United Methodist Church in Caroga Lake. She retired from the Wheelerville Central School District after 40 years of dedicated service. Katherine was known for her kindness and always putting others first. She touched the hearts of many children while working for the Wheelerville School District. She was the curator of the Caroga Lake Museum, as well as the local historian of Caroga Lake. Katherine was never shy about stepping forward and taking charge. She was a member of the Nick Stoner Senior Citizens Center and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Caroga Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Katherine was known for her biscuits, bread and contagious laugh. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her two children: Michael Schmutz Beverly of Ballston Spa and Pat Schelmbauer John of Saratoga Springs; eight grandchildren: Lisa, J.L., Scott, Renee¢, Laurie, Brian, Ebony and Amy. Additional survivors include: 10 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, several nieces and nephews and several life long friends. In addition to her husband and her parents, three brothers and a sister preceded Katherine in death. Friends and relatives are invited and may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday January 28, 2010 at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home; 51 Fremont Street; Gloversville. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Friday January 29, 2010 at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. R. W. Williams officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Katherine's name to Mountain Valley Hospice; 108 Steele Ave; Gloversville, NY 12078.
