Obituary of Louis A. Greco
Louis A. Greco, 92, of West Main Street, passed away peacefully Thursday at St. Mary s Hospital after a brief illness, with his family at his side.
Born in Amsterdam on August 11, 1917, he was the son of the late Vito Greco and Caterina Greco-Romano and Antonio Romano. He was a 1934 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. Following his graduation, he secured a position with Marcus Breier Leather Co. working nine years before he was drafted into the Army in 1943 , leaving his wife Gen and baby son Vito Butch . He proudly served for three years with the 8th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division in Europe. Wounded in action two times, he was awarded the Purple Heart twice as well as two bronze stars by General Patton and was also the recipient of the French Cross, five battle stars, Presidential Citation and European Medal. Following the war he returned home to his family. His daughter Kathleen became the newest member of the family. Lou then resumed his career with the Marcus Breier firm and continued to work until his retirement in 1987. He remain active throughout his life until a short time before his passing. He and his beloved wife, the former Genevieve Cosentino were married June 16, 1941. They traveled, and enjoyed their summer home in Edinburgh and visiting family and friends. After the loss of Gen on March 5, 1996, he continued traveling, golfing and his participation in many activities such as the Columbian Social Club where he was honored for fifty years of service as financial secretary. He was also a member of the St. Agnello Congrega, Military Order Of The Purple Heart, American Legion and Amvets. A faithful parishoner of St. Michael The Archangel Church and now Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel, Lou was an honorary life member of the Knights Of Columbus 209. He was a member of the Port Jackson Bocce Club and the 4th Armored Division Assoc.
Survivors include his son Vito Greco , daughter in law Sandy, his daughter Kathleen Williams and son in law Dennis all of Amsterdam; his grandchildren; Lisa Craig Stannard, Louis AundreaGreco, Thomas Nia Greco, Michael Tammy Niemczura and Jason Tami Niemczura; great grandchildren; Jacob, Sean, Conner, Bryce, Gianna, Jacob and Christian; sister; Rae Tucci of Amsterdam; his brother in law and "best friend" Rosario Liccardi of Johnstown; sister in law Nancy Greco; brothers and sisters in law; Mr. & Mrs Thomas Cosentino, Mr & Mrs. Albert Natale and Mr. & Mrs Edward Myslowski all of Amsterdam; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lou was also predeceased by a brother, Vito A. Greco and sisters Anne Liccardi and Carmella Alessi.
A Mass Of Christian Burial will be offered Monday at 9:15 am at Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel Church by Fr. Lawrence J. Decker. Interment will follow with military honors at St. Mary's Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to the Mass and may also call Sunday from 2-5 pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in his memory to St. Mary's Hospital Foundation in care of the funeral home office.
