Obituary of Miss Sarah A. Abbattista
Sarah A. Abbattista, 87, of Amsterdam, passed away Thursday morning, April 13, 2017 at River Ridge Living Center, LLC, in Amsterdam.
Born in Amsterdam, NY on May 30, 1929, a daughter of the late Michael and Antoinette Conti Abbattista. She was a lifelong Amsterdam resident and attended Amsterdam schools.
Sarah was employed for many years as a secretary at the General Electric Company in Schenectady. She also worked for a time at ALCO Products in Amsterdam and as dispatcher for G.A.V.A.C also in Amsterdam.
Sarah was a devoted communicant of the former St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church and currently was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. She was a member of the church parish council for many years, the former St. Rita Sodality and was also a member of the General Electric Women's Club. Sarah was a volunteer teacher of religious education at St. Mary's Church. Over the years she was a very big part of the former St. Michael's Church and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church spaghetti suppers, pasta e fagioli dinners and the annual church festa. She was always there to lend a helping hand.
She is survived by her two beloved nieces and nephew, Grace (Harry) Bylebyl of Amsterdam, Regina (Kelli Martin) Zaccardo of Ballston Spa, NY and Joseph (Sue) Zaccardo of Amsterdam. Her dear brother-in-law, Louis Zaccardo of Amsterdam. Grand-nieces, Michele (Alex) Ibarra and Anette ( Jeremy) Hermann, Sarah (Robert) Kraemer and Kristina (Jeffrey) Graves. Great-great nieces and nephews, Madelyn Kraemer, Michael Kraemer and Jeremiah Hermann. Several cousins also survive.
Sarah was predeceased by her dear sister, Geraldine A. "Gerry" Zaccardo on January 7, 2003.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday April 17, 2017 at 11:15 AM at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Roman Catholic Church, 39 St. John St. Amsterdam, NY with Father Lawrence J. Decker as celebrant. The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday prior to the Mass from 10:00 to 11:00AM at OLMC church. Interment will follow in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Amsterdam. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, 39 St. John St. Amsterdam, NY 12010.
