Obituary of Agnes L. Gilbert
Agnes L. Gilbert, age 92, of Mayfield passed away on Friday May 14, 2010 at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility in Gloversville.
She was born in Gloversville, NY on September 21, 1917 the daughter of the late Edward and Jennie VanNostrand Lent.
Agnes was a graduate of Gloversville High School.
In 1934, Agnes married Hugh M. Gilbert. They shared over 50 years united in marriage until his passing on November 16, 1985.
She worked in the Mayfield Central School kitchen as well as the Getman Home Kitchen as a cook. Agnes went on to own and operate SusyLu's Flying Saucer in Mayfield until 1965. Lastly, she worked at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility as the Assistant Administrator until her retirement in 1984.
Agnes was a member of the Mayfield Central Presbyterian Church.
Agnes was a member and leader of the 4-H club for many years and cooked for the 4-H Camp in Speculator, NY for 10 years. Agnes was also a member of the Mayfield and Fulton County Republican Clubs, the Business and Professional Women's Association and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Agnes initiated the "Ring of Fire" around the Great Sacandaga Lake in 1988.
Agnes is survived by her two daughters: Sylvia G. Parker of Mayfield and Susan M. Hall Richard of Hockessin, DE, one son: Lucian A. Gilbert of Ontario, NY.
Additional survivors include: 7 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren as well as Donna Gilbert, who is the mother of 4 of Agnes' grandsons.
In addition to her husband and parents, Agnes was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Lent and a sister, Shirley Reed.
Friends and relatives are invited and may call from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday May 16, 2010 at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville. A funeral service will be conducted immediately following the conclusion of calling hours at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Bonnie Orth officiating.
