Oh my - I realize it's late to be posting, but I just saw Sal's death notice on Albanyjazz.com We played regularly in the early 1970s and Sal was the pianist on my first professional gig as a leader, using Nick Brignola sidemen. I could not have asked for a more supportive or creative pianist, and we had fun too!

I happened to be on albanyjazz.com today and was very saddened to learn of Sal's passing. I sang with Sal many years ago in the Ed Wool band. Just knowing Sal was on a gig put me in a good mood. He was that rare musician that was both a brilliant musician and a brilliant human being. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to know him.

Sal was such a great guy. We are both from Gloversville. Years ago I would go to his house and we would play. He knew my father as a piano player. He once brought me a chart of “Indiana” and told me how much my father liked to play that tune. Once we did One Caroline Street as a duo, it was an honor and a pleasure, and he had a rhythm box..the owner didn't like it...it was funny! Last I saw him was a couple of years ago I was playing at 9 Maple and he knocked on the window, smiling as alwyas. He will be buried in the same cemetery where my parents are buried, Mt Carmel in Johnstown. Whenever I saw him he was smiling. It is a great loss.

I had the privilege of working with Sal a few years back as a vocalist with the Spectrum Orchestra. He was always a gentleman and ready to go. Always had a smile on his face and as easy going as anyone could be. He gave me one of the most meaningful compliments I have ever received as a singer, and will never forget him for that. It truly meant a lot.
He will be missed.
God Bless..

I am saddened to learn of the death of my "cousin" Sal. He was part of my family for more than 50 years; & we shared many happy times. My boys always looked forward to visiting him when we were in Gloversville. He kept them very busy with his musical "toys".
I regret I am unable to be with you this week, but Sal; & all of you are in my prayers.

Sal will always be very dear to me. What a wonderful man and musician who taught me so much. One of my favorite pianists, he was a joy to work with on the bandstand and to sit and chat with. As a young up and coming musician in the mid 1990's, Sal was always very encouraging to me and continued as such until his passing. Sal lives on in all of us who will never forget his spirit and his wonderful sound.

I am sorry to hear of Sal's passing. I remember many times when Sal would come by the clubs after his job was over and say hello. He was always very friendly.

Please accept my condolences. Sal was a friend and fellow pianist when we were in high school. He called me a couple of years ago to thank me for introducing him to the music of George Shearing, an artist he very much admired. I am very saddened by the news of his passing. As we musicians say, " He has gone to that great jazzband in the sky, which keeps getting better and better". God Love Him.

I only met Sam a few times with fellow musicians in Albany and never had the pleasure of working with him. Sam was a welcoming soul as he was a gifted pianist. He will be missed much by his fellow musicians.
My condolences to his family.

As a booking agent in the 70's, I found that Sal was the most versatile and knowledgeable pianist in the Albany area. He knew thousands of tunes and was very adept at
backing others.
He played extensively with such people as Doc Cheatham, Sal Nistico, Bill Watrous, Atilla Zoller, Zoot Sims, Lee Konitz and Chet Baker.
Sal was someone who could appreciate music wherever it came from, and loved
adopting modern pop songs into jazz vehicles.
Sal loved pastry. I remember we went down to NYC to hear Brignola play with Ted
Curson at the Tin Palace. He insisted that we go to a famous Italian bakery to
get these pastries he dreamed of.
When we were watching Curson, our car was broken into and everything was stolen.
Sal was crestfallen at the loss of his pastries.
We'll miss you Sal!
