Obituary of Sophia Martuscello

Sophia Martuscello, 101, formerly of West Main St., died peacefully Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Mt. Loretto Nursing Home in Amsterdam. A life resident of Amsterdam she was born July 6, 1908 daughter of the late John and Maria Antonia Petrucci Martuscello. Sophia was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam and the Amsterdam School of Commerce. She worked as a bookkeeper at Rudolph?s Jewelers and later at Seigel?s Jewelers in Amsterdam for over 41 years, retiring in 1969. She also worked at the New Paris Shop in Amsterdam. Sophia was the eldest parishioner of the former St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Amsterdam and was a member of the Santa Sofia Society and St. Anthony?s Auxiliary. Her loving family includes her nieces Philomena Tambasco, Elaine and Vincenzo Nicosia and Judith and Ray Ludwin all of Amsterdam and her nephew Daniel and Carol Martuscello of Dublin, GA. Several great nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews and cousins also survive. Prayer Services will be at 8:30AM on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam with A Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 9:15AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, St. John St., Amsterdam with Fr. Lawrence J. Decker as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends from 5:00 to 7:00PM Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
