Obituary of Joseph P. Rogers
Joseph P. Rogers, 87, formerly of the Hi-Rise Apartments, passed away peacefully Monday evening at the Mount Loretto Nursing Home after a long illness.
Born in Amsterdam on January 13, 1923, he was the son of the late Vincent and Elizabeth Staniulis Racys Rogers. A 1941 graduate of the Perth Central School, he was a lifelong resident. During World War II, Joe proudly served with the US Army as a private First Class in the European Theater Of Operations. He was awarded three bronze stars, the Victory & European medals as well as a citation from Sen. Hugh Farley later in life honoring him for his service in the French campaign.
He was an honorary life member of the Disabled American Veterans. In these last years, Joe recounted many of the experiences he went through during the war. Joe worked for a number of years as a research and dye technician for Mohasco and later at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital before he retired in 1985. He was a parishioner of the former St. Casimir?s Roman Catholic Church.
On August 16, 1953 he was united in marriage to the former Rose Poremba at St. Stanislaus? Church. She predeceased him on Oct. 7, 1999. Brothers Stanley and Francis Rogers, and sisters Nellie Traskos and Polly Kutinskas also predeceased him.
His loving family includes his daughter Anne and her husband Dennis Haggerty of Johnstown; son James J. and his wife Andrea Rogers of Amsterdam; brother Alfred and his wife Virginia Rogers of Perth; grandchildren; Matthew Rogers, Michael Miller, Jennifer Rogers and Kaitlyn Rogers; step grandchildren; Dereck Haggerty, Lt. Cdr. Brian Lisa Haggerty USN, Jenne and Shanan Haggerty; step great grandchildren Lauren, James and Elizabeth Haggerty; sisters in law; Eleanor P. Smith of Amsterdam and Lylian Rogers of Scotia; a brother in law Ted Zawilinski of Bloomington Ind.; nieces, nephews and cousins. Joseph?s family is most grateful to the staff of the second floor at Mt. Loretto for their kindness and wonderful care he received this past year.
Services are Thursday at 9:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Funeral Mass which will be offered at 10:00 am at St. Stanislaus? Church. Fr. O. Robert DeMartinis, celebrant, assisted by Deacon Alfred Manzella. Interment will follow with military honors in St. Casimir?s Cemetery. calling hours are today from 5-7 pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Community Hospice Of Amsterdam or GAVAC both in care of the funeral home office.
