Obituary of William J. Patterson
William J. Patterson Jr., 92, of Community Dr. Schenectady, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon at the Kingsway Rehabilitation Center where he was a patient for one day.
Born in Amsterdam on Nov. 24, 1917, he was the son of the late William J. Patterson Sr. and Mary Reynolds Patterson. He was a 1936 graduate of St. Mary s Institute. Bill was first employed by the Naval Supply Depot in Scotia as a fire inspector. He retired in 1980 from the Insurance Service Agency of Syracuse as a field representative. During World War II, he proudly served with the US Navy in the Pacific Theater Of Operations and with the 2nd Marine Division as a pharmacist mate.
Bill lived independently and kept his keen mind and wonderful sense of humor until the end. He was active at St. Paul The Apostle Roman Catholic Church where he served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the Rotterdam Elks Lodge and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Schenectady Chapter. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed golf, travel and his lunch group. Bill and his wife loved attending many family functions and both will be greatly missed.
His beloved wife, the former Margaret Cardillo predeceased him in 2007. A sister, Margaret Blatchford also predeceased him.
He leaves his sister, Ann Stellato of Amsterdam as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and cousins.,
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday at 9:15 am at St. Mary s R.C. Church, 156 East Main Street Amsterdam. Fr. John Medwid, celebrant. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Wednesday evening from 4-7 pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. The Rotterdam Elks will pay respects to their brother with a service at 6:45 pm. Contributions may be made in his name to the Schenectady City Mission in care of the funeral home office, 12010.
