Obituary of William J. Barkevich
Mr. William J. Barkevich, 84 years old, of Clayton Street, died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam. He was born September 26, 1926 in Amsterdam, the son of James and Mary Mikalonis Barkevich. Bill was a life long resident of Amsterdam and a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
He served his country during WW2 and the Korean War with the US Navy. Bill then went to work as an electrician with the General Electric Co. retiring in 1989 after 30 years of employment. After retirement he served as a volunteer for an archeological expedition in Mexico. Bill attended Schenectady County CC and Fulton-Montgomery CC. He was a communicant of the former St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church.
Bill was predeceased by his wife, the former Veronica Christie. He is survived by his son Robert W. Barkevich of Amsterdam; his sister Frances Wollen of Amsterdam; three grandchildren: Peter and Robert Barkevich and Kelly Faboskay; and three great grandchildren: Alyssa and Jayden Barkevich and Damien Jennings. Bill was also predeceased by two sisters Stella Landry and Anne Miles.
Funeral services will be held 11:00am Thursday at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. Burial will take place in St. Casimir's Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 until 7:00pm on Wednesday at the funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
