Obituary of John Terleckey

On October 27, 2010 we lost our beloved husband, father and friend John Terleckey. John was born on December 13, 1928 to John and Anna Lahaman Terleckey. He always considered Amsterdam, NY his home, but he and his family had also resided in Pownal, VT where he supplied hay and feed to the former Green Mountain Park Race Track. In 1947 after the death of their father, John 16 and Steve 10 were faced with running the family farm. In 1952 recognizing the limitations of only doing business in his small local community John set out for New York City with $50.00 dollars in his pocket searching for customers to purchase the hay and straw he and Steve were producing in Amsterdam, NY. After 2 days of calling on police departments, riding stables, milk and ice delivery companies, stables and the zoo, John returned home with the order. This marks the beginning of Terleckey Brothers Hay and Straw. John was passionate about his business and with hard work, integrity, and dedication he and his family were able to expand the original hay business to include other diverse enterprises in the trucking, tire, freight forwarding and most recently bio fuel industries. John and his wife Noma were married on February 1, 1959. They have lived and worked side by side ever since building their business and family. John was more than just a father to his three children. He was also a friend and teacher. Helping us to learn to be self reliant by allowing us to make decisions for ourselves and supporting us and guiding us through our mistakes and helping us learn from them and always sharing his wisdom. John is surivived by his wife Noma, daughter Patty Terleckey of Amsterdam. Two sons, John Terleckey Becky and Kevin Terleckey Sue of Amsterdam. Four grandchildren, John Charles Terleckey, Kevin James Terleckey, Brittney Terleckey and Michael Shufelt. His sister Genevieve Zieser of Speculator, NY. Brother Steven Terleckey of Amsterdam and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Saturday October 30, 2010 at 11:00A.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY with family member and Rev. Bob Seelow presiding. The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday October 30, 2010 beginning at 10:00AM prior to the service at the funeral home.
