Obituary of William W. Smrtic

William W. Smrtic, age 77, of Gloversville passed away on Saturday October 30, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam. He was born in Gloversville, NY on May 26, 1933 the son of the late Andrew and Mildred Wandel Smrtic. Bill graduated from Gloversville High School with the Class of 1951. He worked for Fulton County as the County Clerk for many years as well as Deputy Sheriff for many years. Bill was of the Catholic faith and was a parishioner of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Gloversville. On July 6, 1957, Bill married the former Ann Been. They have shared 53 years united in marriage. Bill was a member of the Young Republicans Club of Fulton County, Knights of Columbus, Concordia Singing Society, NYS Sheriffs Association, Fulton County Sheriffs Association, County Clerks Association and the Kingsboro Golf Club. Bill was the former owner of Wul-Shu in Johnstown. He enjoyed fishing, camping, skiing and golfing. Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ann Been Smrtic, a daughter, MaryEllen Smrtic Dennis of Las Vegas, NV, three sons, Michael Smrtic Noelle of Johnstown, Mark Smrtic Betsy of Westford, MA and Matthew Smrtic Leslie of Gloversville. Additional Survivors include, 8 grandchildren, Emily, Madison, Carly, Megan, Benjamin, Andrea, Matthew, William, a brother-in-law, Bernard Been Mary, a sister-in-law, Philomena Been as well as several cousins. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Edmund Been. Friends and relatives are invited and may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday November 1, 2010 at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville. A prayer service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday November 2, 2010 at 10:15 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 149 South Main Street, Gloversville, with the Rev. Rendell Torres as Celebrant. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in memory of Bill to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078.
