Obituary of Florence Elmendorf
Florence C. ?Connie? Elmendorf, 93, formerly of Lindsay Street, passed away Thursday morning at the Mountain Valley Hospice House. She had been a resident of the Hillcrest Springs Adult Home for the past several years. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Born in Amsterdam on June 20, 1917 to James and Elizabeth Kendall Grayson, she was a 1935 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School, and the Amsterdam School of Commerce in 1936. She was employed by the John E. Larrabee Company, the Amsterdam Board Of Education, Bigelow Sanford, and retired in 1973 from the Mohasco Corporation. During the war, she worked part time for the Stanley Sportswear Co. Connie was a member of the St. Monica Court 61 Order of The Amaranth, where she served as prelate and historian, the Mohawk Valley Historical Society and the Hagaman Seniors. She was a member of the United Methodist Church on Golf Course Road.
On June 18, 1936, she was united in marriage to John W. ?Bill? Elmendorf. He predeceased her on Feb. 3, 2006. Her only brother, Oswald ?Ozzy? Grayson and his wife Millie also predeceased her.
She leaves her daughters, Dawn E. and her husband Walter Ryan of Mayfield and Debby C. Elmendorf of Amsterdam; her granddaughter Catherine A. ?Carey? Ryan McDonald and her husband Scott of Hoboken, N.J., a niece Sharon Opiela of Scotia and several nephews.
A service will take place Saturday at 12:30 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. The Rev. Greg DeSalvatore officiating. Interment will follow in the Hagaman Cemetery. Calling hours are today Friday from 5-7 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the United Methodist Church or Hillcrest Springs Adult Home, both in care of the funeral home office.
