Obituary of Mary E. Smith

Mary E. Smith, 98, formerly of Broad Street, Gloversville, died November 17, 2010 at the Baptist Health Nursing & Retirement Center, Scotia. Mary was born the daughter of William H. and Cora E. Lewis in Ballston Spa on April 30, 1912. She was married to the late Thomas Bartlett "Bart" Smith for 58 years. Mr. Smith died October 25, 1993. Mary was employed for 39 years in the shipping room of Louis Meyers & Son in Gloversville. She was a long-time member of St. James Lutheran Church and of the Concordia Club. Mary greatly enjoyed gardening and was an excellent baker. She was also a great lover of all cats. She is survived by her nephew, Richard W. Lewis, Jr. Linda of Scotia, with whom she resided for a time before requiring nursing care. Survivors include nieces and nephews: Norma String Robert of Utica, Joyce Goodbread Arnold of Gloversville, Joan Giberson Thomas of Lakehurst, NJ, Paul Lewis Sallyof Endicott, Loretta Kadle of Gloversville and Robert Chizek Beverly of Webster. Other survivors include cousins: Gertrude Jones of Middle Grove, Estella Jones of Corinth and Earl Jones of Porters Corners. Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 20 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. L. David Almleaf officiating. Interment will take place at East Galway Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, 521 N. Main St; Gloversville, NY 12078.
