Obituary of Bernard J. Going
Mr. Bernard J. Going, Jr., 80, proprietor of the former Windsor Motel & Restaurant, died peacefully on Monday, December 20, 2010 at Lee High Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA surrounded by his loving family. Born in Amsterdam on October 11, 1930 he was the son of the late Bernard J. and Ann Going, Sr.
A graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School, Bernie served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 through 1954 on the aircraft carrier 41, which is now a museum located in San Diego, CA. He then worked for Mohasco Industries as a Manager of Trade Shows. Leveraging his entrepreneurial spirit, he constructed the Windsor Motel on land purchased from Leroy Petty, which was part of the original Sanford Stud Farm. Shortly after constructing the Motel, he acquired the adjacent one room school house and converted it into the Windsor Restaurant. The restaurant was a local favorite gathering place. The motel and restaurant were in operation for 50 years before Bernie sold the property to Lowes in 2006 and retired. While operating the motel and restaurant, Bernie purchased Midline Stables and opened the Windsor Driving Range. For several years, he ran Halloween Haunted Hayrides and donated the proceeds to local community organizations.
He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his son Bernard J. Going, III, husband of Joan from Macungie, PA, and his daughter Deborah McGarvey, wife of Michael from Littleton, CO. He was dedicated to his six grandchildren: Matthew, Ellen and Marla McGarvey, and Caitlin, Caroline, and Claire Going. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Baker and his nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, December 27, 2010 at 11 o'clock at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam with the Rev. John Medwid presiding. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery with military honors.
