Obituary of Benedetto Nicosia
Benedetto Nicosia, 98, formerly of St. John Street, Amsterdam, NY died peacefully into the arms of the Lord on December 23, 2010. Born in New York City on September 13, 1912 he was the son of the late Anthony and Luisa Gravagna Nicosia.
Mr. Nicosia was a veteran of WWII and served proudly with the United States Navy. He was employed as a master weaver for Mohasco in Amsterdam. Later he went to work for General Electric as a machinist until his retirement at the age of 65. He was a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church where he sung in the choir. Mr. Nicosia was also a member of the St. Anthony Holy Name Society, Horace J. Inman Senior Center and a Yankee fan. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
On December 31, 1939 he was united in marriage to the former Concetta Viscusi. That union lasted 68 years until her passing on November 7, 2007. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Salvatore Nicosia, Angeline DeStefano, Antoinette Orapello, Benedetta Fiorillo, Nancy Fiorillo, Theresa Peconie, Frank Vassi and Charles Vassi.
His loving family includes his daughters Louise Drozic, Joanne Belev and her husband George and Monica Kaiser and her husband Robert; one sister, Josephine Hassfurter; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, December 27, 2010 at 11:15a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church, St. John Street, Amsterdam. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. There are no calling hours. Private Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Horace J. Inman Senior Citizens Center, 53 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
