Obituary of George P. Alikonis
George P. Alikonis, Jr., 86 passed away December 24th 2010 at his sister Irene and brother in law Duane 's home in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Born October 1, 1924 in the Town Of Florida to George P. Sr. and Teofila Satula Alikonis, he was a proud World War II veteran. George participated in the invasion of Normandy and the Battle Of The Bulge. He served with the 18th infantry in Belgium, France, Germany and Czechoslovakia. He was awarded the Purple Heart, European , African, Eastern Service and Good Conduct medals as well as the Victory medal. George was retired from the General Electric Company. He was a member of the John J. Wyszomirski Post 701 American Legion for 60 years, and the Johnstown Moose for 47 years. He leaves his wife, Edna Rowledge Alikonis, daughter Gail Fallova, sisters Stacia McQuade, Isabel Buczek and Irene Duane Foote; brother Steve Alikonis, grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Gary Alikonis, two sisters and two brothers. He will be sadly missed.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, May 31st from 4-7 pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. Members of Post 701 will gather at 6pm to honor their departed brother. A vigil prayer service will follow at 6:45 pm by Fr. O. Robert DeMartinis. A committal service will take place on Wednesday at 12 noon at the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery in Schuylerville with full military honors. A procession will leave the funeral home parking lot at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, it was George's own request that memorials may be made in his name to Post 701 in care of the funeral home office.
