Obituary of Albert Terry
Albert "Irish" Terry, 92, of Bulls Head Road, passed away peacefully Wednesday noon at Ellis Hospital with family at his side.
Born in Lurgan, Northern Ireland on Dec. 10, 1918, he was the son of the late James and Sarah Kennedy Terry. Following the early death of his mother, he emigrated with his family to the United States and settled in Amsterdam. In 1942 he entered the US Army and served in the European Theater Of Operations during World War II. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Amsterdam and began his long career as a driver for the city. He first worked for the FJ&G Trolley and later bus line , retiring in 1973. He continued after retirement to work as a driver, and was well known throughout the city by not only students he drove, but also the many seniors he assisted. Irish cherished the many friendships he made along the way, and was still recognized by those whom he served. He loved music, and played the drums and sang in his own trio "Irish Terry & His Boys" at square dances and was a member of the musician's union. He was also a proud member of the Amalgamated Transit Driver's Union.
In his free time, Irish loved to be outdoors, especially mowing the acres on his Bulls Head Road farm. He attended the Calvary Assembly Of God in Amsterdam.
On March 3, 1946, he was united in marriage to the former S. Irma Sweet. That loving union lasted until her passing on November 11, 2003.
He leaves his sons; David L. and his wife Susan Terry of Schenectady, and Donald A. and his wife Diane Terry of Duanesburg; granddaughters; Kathy and her husband Matthew Modderno, Becky, Sarah and Lisa Terry; nephews William and Richard Terry and cousins. His brother Jack Terry predeceased him.
A service to celebrate his life will take place Tuesday at 11:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. Spring interment will take place with military honors in Chuctanunda Cemetery, Minaville. Calling hours are Monday Jan. 3 from 5-8 pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Disease And Related Disorders Asso. in care of the funeral home office.
