Obituary of Helen Hugo
Helen Hugo, 98, formerly of the Holland Garden Apartments, passed away Wednesday morning peacefully at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility.
Born in Amsterdam on March 15, 1912, the daughter of the late George and Catherine Gediekas Gaska, she was a 1930 graduate of Amsterdam High School. She worked as an order editor for Amsterdam Print until she retired in 1981.
Helen was a lifelong active parishioner of St. Casimir?s Roman Catholic Church. Her numerous church activities included serving as a leader of worship and parish committee member. She was a member and past president of the St. Casimir?s Ladies Auxiliary, the Living Rosary Society and Council 100 of the Knights of Lithuania. She also served as chaplain and vice president of the St. Casimir?s Seniors. An avid bowler, she was a member of St. Mary?s Hospital?s Club 60.
Helen was a devoted mother and grandmother who will be lovingly remembered for her devout faith, constant concern for her family and dear friends, and her wonderful cooking and baking.
Her husband, John Hugo predeceased her on Oct. 21, 1966. Her only sibling, her sister Irene Stranges, also predeceased her.
She leaves her loving daughter Barbara and her husband Guy Lawrence of Amsterdam; her dear grandchildren Kristen & Scott Michalski ; and Mark and Rory Lawrence; great grandchildren; Erin & Ryan Michalski and two nieces.
Funeral services are Saturday at 8:30 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Mass Of Christian Burial will be offered by Fr. John Medwid at 9:15 am at St. Mary?s Church. Interment is in the family plot in St. Casimir?s Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4-6 pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made in her memory to the activities fund at Wilkinson or the Community Hospice both in care of the funeral home office. Helen?s family is most grateful to Dr. Michael Sheridan and the entire staff at Wilkinson for her wonderful care these past few years.
