Obituary of Joseph W Markulis
Joseph W. Markulis, 89, formerly of Charleston, NY passed away peacefully at St. Johnsville Nursing Home on January 22, 2011. He was born March 31, 1921 in Amsterdam, NY, the son of the late William and Winifred Lados Markulis.
Joe was a life time resident of the area and attended local schools. He has lived in Charleston since the 1970's. He was enlisted in the United States ARMY in 1942 and was honorably discharged soon after due to injury. He worked for Mohasco for many years as a stock room manager. Joseph was united in marriage to Margaret Gaugler on January 23, 1944. They shared a beautiful 61 years together until her passing in 2005. He is a former parishioner of St. Cecilia's Church.
He enjoyed reading, gardening, sports, especially the New York Giants, and the New York Mets. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Joseph's loving family includes his daughters Nancy Herman Marotta of Fultonville, and Jude Brown of Seattle; grand children, Mark Zajac, David Aubrey Zajac, Eli Brown, Matthew Marotta and Daniel Jessica Marotta; great grand children, Marion Marotta, Lauren and Lindsey Marotta, Kozmo and Meza Zajac. He is also survived by his sister Charlotte Chet Zostautus.
In addition to his parents he is predeceased by two brothers, Steve and Leon Markulis and three sisters, Camille Zawisza, Mildred Betka, and Lottie Arndt.
Funeral arrangements at this time are in the care of Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St. Fultonville, NY 12072. A mass of Christian burial will take place March 31, 2011 at 10 AM, at St. Cecilia's R.C. Church. Interment will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Fort Johnson following the mass with military honors. Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Johnsville Nursing Home, in care of the funeral home office.
