Obituary of John F. Jevitt

John F. Jevitt, 92, of Nadler Road, Amsterdam passed away unexpectedly Monday evening at his residence. John was born August 7, 1918 in Avoca, PA and was the son of the late Anthony and Julia Kuna Dziewit. He was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools. John was a US Army Veteran of WWII where he served as a medical administrative specialist at the rank of Staff Sergeant, was in the Med Det. 112th A/B Army, and was in the battles of Central Europe and Rhineland Ardennes. John was employed as a Union Carpenter for the United Brotherhood Carpenters Union Local #370 for various construction companies throughout the area. He also owned and operated the Amsterdam Fireworks Company in Amsterdam where he retired a number of years ago. John was a pilot and flew a Sea Plane out of the Mayfield Lake for many years. He was an active member of the Perth Seniors and was a parishioner of the St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church. He loved hunting and fishing and he enjoyed working in his garden. He grew his own grapes and made his own wine, and he chopped wood until the age of 91 years. On February 20, 1960, he married the former Helen Gatchell who passed April 24, 1999. He is survived by two sons, James M. Jevitt of Amsterdam and Joseph H. Gatchell and his wife Cindy of Amsterdam; two daughters, Felicia Jevitt and her husband Jeffrey Schneider of Mason, Ohio, and Yvette Jevitt of Amsterdam; two brothers, Walter Jevitt of Amsterdam and Raymond Jevitt of Chicago, IL; a sister Helen Krygowski of Rexford, NY; five grandchildren, David Gatchell and his wife Jenn, Amanda Jevitt, Morgan Schneider, Justin Jevitt and Jeremy Schneider; two great grandchildren, Nicholas Korona and Haley Gatchell and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 5, at 9:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be Celebrated at 10:00 am at St. Stephens Roman Catholic Church, 46 Pawling Street, Hagaman, NY with the Rev. Martin DeRose as Celebrant. Military honors will take place at the church. Burial will take place in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 7 pm at the funeral home.
