Obituary of Donald A. Johnson

Donald A. Johnson, age 77, died at his home in Mayfield surrounded by his family and friends on Monday, February 21, 2011, following a long illness. He was born on May 2, 1933 in Gloversville, the son of the late Peter Johnson and Christina Warner Johnson. He served in the US Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He worked with his father in the family business, Peter Johnson and Sons and Johnson Lumber Company. Later in his career he was plant manager of two locations of Coleco Industries in Amsterdam and was production manager at N. A. Taylor Company in Johnstown for 19 years. Don was a member of the American Legion of Northville. He served on the Board of Directors of Fulmont Community Action Agency and B.O.C.E.S. He was Board President of the United Way of Fulton County where he was awarded Director of Emeritus status. He served as a volunteer at Ida McGinnis Senior Citizens Center. He also served as Board Member, Entertainment Chairman, Vice President and President of The Eccentric Club. He was always there to help everyone he knew. He did not know what the word "no" meant. He had many good friends and "adopted" family. Don was married to Gusette Blumberg on November 21, 1954. Together they shared 56 wonderful years together. Additional survivors include: a daughter, Robin Johnson of Gloversville; brother, Roger Johnson Trisha of Johnstown; niece, Lisa Johnson of Mayfield; nephew, David P. Johnson of Johnstown; and several cousins. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a funeral service will be follow at 7:00 p.m. with the Rev. Richard C. Leonard officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Northville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mayfield Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O.
