Obituary of Angelo P. Califano

Angelo P. Califano, 99, of Grieme Avenue, passed away peacefully Thursday morning at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. Born June 5, 1911 in Amsterdam where he resided his entire life, he was the last surviving son of the late Antonio and Maria Grazia Califano. At one time he was associated in his family business, the former Califano's Market and later, for twenty five years worked for the New York State Department of Transportation. He retired from the Thruway position in 1979. Angelo was also a John Hancock Insurance Agent for a time. He was a lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church and was active as an usher and bingo worker. A member of the St. Anthony-Holy Name Society, he assisted with the annual pasta fagiole and spaghetti dinners. Angelo was an honorary life member of Council 209 Knights of Columbus and in his earlier years was an avid bowler. He also was a self taught carpenter and proudly remodeled his own home. He remained active and sharp of mind into his 100th year and looked forward to a special celebration planned for that occasion this June. His beloved wife, the former Mary Salerno, predeceased him in 1998. His daughter, Mary Grace Califano died in 2007 and his brothers, Ralph and Earl Califano have passed away. Angelo's family is most grateful to the caring staff at River Ridge for the care he received while in rehabilitation. His loving family includes his two sons; Robert A.
