Obituary of Mary J. Manning

Mary Johanna Manning, she always gave more than she took! Mary Manning, a kind and beautiful human being whose life spanned nearly a century, left this earth a poorer place when she died March 20, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam. Mary was born March 5, 1914. She attended St. Mary's Institute Amsterdam and Amsterdam School of Commerce. She served with honor in the U.S. Coast Guard World during War II 1944-46 as a SPX 3c. After the war, she worked for Empire Blue Cross & Blue Shield in Albany until she retired in 1976 and moved back to her beloved Tribes Hill. Mary was very active in numerous civic organizations, including Past President of the Tamara American Legion, Post 1708, Albany, Iroquois Senior Citizen Center of Tribes Hill, and Altar Society of the Sacred Heart Church. Mary is survived by multiple California residents: her sister Ellen M. Maschke; nephew Edward G. Maschke; great grand nieces, Gwen Elaine Maschke, Jennifer Ellen Hall, and Aurora Marie Dotson; and ten great, great grand nieces and nephews Destiny LaReine Phillips, Aaliyah Nicole Phillips, Sierra S. Hall, Cinnamon Marie Hall, Trevion Edward Hall, Aaron Joseph Ruffin, Aiasiah Michael Ruffin, Chase Daniel Dotson, Steven Carl Dotson, and Alexandria Christine Dotson. She is predeceased by her parents: Michael and Mary Byrne Manning and her Aunt, Annie Byrne, all of Tribes Hill; her grand nephew, Shawn Maschke of Cleveland, Ohio and his father and grandfather, Michael M. Maschke and Edward J. Maschke, both of Sun City, Arizona. Mary will be missed by many dear neighbors, especially David and Cathy Knowlton, and others residents of Tribes Hill. Many thanks are extended to all the generous people who helped Mary through her later years while living alone until the age of 96 in her home on Mohawk Drive. She will also be missed dearly by her cousin and her husband, Julia and David Nitengale-Born of Woodberry, CT, who visited her often and always helped her with her "honey-do" lists. . Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010. Her loving friends may celebrate her life at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tribes Hill where a memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 10 AM. Followed by burial at St. Mary's cemetery in Fort Johnson. In lieu of flowers, friends may send donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of America and the Cancer Society of America in care of the funeral home office.
