Obituary of Philomena Pileckas

Philomena Pileckas, 93, of Chuctanunda Street, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital. Born in Hagaman on September 7, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Monica Belzak Pileckas. She received her primary and high school education locally and in 1941 was a graduate of Russell Sage College in Troy. After a brief stint in teaching at the former Theodore Roosevelt Junior High School in Amsterdam and later at Broadalbin High School, she became employed by GE in the accounting department during World War II. After the war, she ventured to New York City where she spent the next thirty years. Phil worked as a copy editor and proof reader by the New York City Crown Publishers, Columbia University Press and New York University Press. She also worked in the same capacity for Mademoiselle and Charm Magazines. A parishioner of St. Stephen's R.C. Church and the former St. Casimir's Church, Phil was an avid reader and painter. She was predeceased by two sisters, Suzanne Pileckas and Nellie Freer, and by three brothers Henry, Joseph and Corp. Allen Pileckas who died in World War II. She leaves her brothers John "Jack" and his wife Teresa Pileckas of Hagaman and Paul and his wife Janet Pileckas of Rome, NY, a sister-in-law Nita Pileckas of Rome, NY; and many nieces and nephews. Services are Tuesday at 9:30 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Mass Of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Stephen's Church. Fr. Pascal A. Iannotti, celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Casimir's Cemetery. A calling hour will begin at 8:30 am Tuesday until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to St. Stephen's Church in care of the funeral home office.
