Obituary of Warren S. Knapp

Warren S. Knapp formerly of Hammondtown Road, passed away peacefully Friday evening at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility on his 89th birthday. He joins his beloved wife Mary in the company of their Lord, just three weeks to the day of her passing. Born in Amsterdam on May 13, 1922 , the only child of the late Lyle W. and Grace Sheldon Knapp, he was a 1940 graduate of Amsterdam High School. Warren began a forty five year career with the General Electric Company as an engineering specialist in its Research and Development Center. He retired in 1985. During World War II he proudly served with the US Marine Corps and was in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He took part in the battle of Iwo Jima and in the occupation of Japan at the end of the war. He was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club, and the Whitney Club, the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Hagaman United Methodist Church. An avid outdoorsman, Warren loved to camp, cross country ski and snow shoe. He was a wonderful husband, dad and grandfather. On Feb. 16, 1946 he was united in marriage to the former Mary Beatty. She predeceased him on April 22nd. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his son Brian Knapp in 2004, an infant daughter Sharon Ann Knapp and his step father, Jack Nichols. He leaves his daughter Laurie and her husband Tom Murey and grandson Edwin Peter Murey all of Broadalbin as well as nieces and nephews from the Beatty family. Services will take place Tuesday at 11:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. The Rev. Bill Delia officiating. Interment will follow with military honors in the Hagaman Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday from 5-7 pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Disease Association or a charity of one's choice in care of the funeral home office.
