Obituary of Ralph A. Stewart

Mr. Ralph A. Stewart, age 95, formerly of Glenville, died Tuesday morning, May 31, 2011 at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home, Gloversville, where he had resided the past four months. He had lived at Park Hill Adult Home in Amsterdam for the past four years. He was born March 15, 1916 in Johnstown, the son of the late Frederick and Florence Avery Stewart. He served in the US Army from 1941 to 1945 during World War II. While in Plattsburgh, NY Sergeant Stewart was the very first WAC Women's Army Corps Recruiter in New York State. He was aboard the first Army transport ship from Marcet, France to Manila, Philippines. He served his country proudly in Hawaii and in the European and Pacific Theaters of Operations. How fitting that he passed away on our traditional Memorial Day. Ralph, known to many as "Stew" worked at Ed Mylott's Restaurant in Johnstown before and after the war. He later worked at Leach Products in Schenectady for 20 years as Shipping and Receiving Manager from 1946 to 1966. He then became a partner in Modernistic Engraving Company in Schenectady where he retired as President in 1981. Ralph was Past Commander and a Life Member of American Legion Post #1092, Niskayuna, where he was Past Chef de Gare of the Forty and Eight. He was Past President and life-time member of the Schenectady Old Time Baseball Players Association and a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Johnstown and Woodlawn Reformed Church in Schenectady. He enjoyed bowling and playing golf. He was very proud of the "Hole in One" that he scored at Schenectady Municipal Golf Course many years ago. Most of all, Stew will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and selfless personality. Stew is survived by: two nephews and a niece, Robert R. Stewart Judy of West Monroe, NY; C. Stewart Monnier Linda of Overland Park, Kansas and Sue Monnier Bowersock Bob of Albuquerque, NM; many grand nieces and grand nephews. He was predeceased by: his sister, Helen S. Wing; two brothers, Kenneth Stewart and Russell Stewart; and a nephew, Loren A. Stewart.
