Obituary of Irene G. Medwid

Irene G. Medwid R.N., 88 of Wilkes Avenue, passed away peacefully Monday evening at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility. Born in Amsterdam on May 24, 1923, she was the daughter of the late John and Joanna Pabis Glazek, she was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School. Irene received her Bachelor Of Science degree in nursing and her permanent nursing teaching certification from Russell Sage College. She completed her graduate work in education at New York University and St. Rose College. Irene's nursing career included educator and nursing administrator for Amsterdam Memorial Hospital and its school of nursing. She was public health nurse for the City Of Amsterdam and school nurse in the Greater Amsterdam School District. She also served as a clinical nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Hospital. Irene was a member of St. Stanislaus' Rosary Society , and a former board member of the Montgomery County Transitional Services, board of Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Literacy Volunteer organization. An avid bridge player, she was a parishioner of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. On January 1, 1948 she was united in marriage to Michael Medwid. He predeceased her on November 25, 1983. She was also predeceased by her sister, Stella Mack. She leaves her loving son, the Rev. Fr. John M. Medwid, pastor of St. Mary's Church in Amsterdam, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. Irene's Mass Of Christian Burial will be offered Friday at 11:00 am at St. Mary's Church, 156 East Main Street. Her son, Fr. John Medwid will be the principal celebrant. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Friday morning from 9am to 11 am at St. Mary's Church Chapel. Interment will follow in St. Stanislaus' Cemetery. Contributions may be made in her name to St. Mary's Church, or St. Mary's Institute both in care of the funeral home office.
