Obituary of Herbert C. Conklin
Herbert C. Conklin, age 88, formerly of Edwards, passed away on July 3, 2011 at the Wilkinson Nursing Home in Amsterdam where he was currently residing.
Calling hours will be at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home in Amsterdam, NY on Friday, July 8th from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. with his funeral service immediately following at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams presiding.
Burial with military honors will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Edwards on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Local arrangements are with French Funeral Home, Edwards.
Herbert was born on September 10, 1922 in Gouverneur to the late Clarence and Harriet Basset Conklin. He graduated from Gouverneur High School and served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945.
Mr. Conklin was a dairy farmer in Edwards from 1959 until 1987. He also worked as a crusher operator and heavy equipment operator for Gouverneur Talc Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1980.
He married Margaret Webb on November 13, 1947 in Oswegatchie. The couple moved to Amsterdam in 2002 to be near their family. Herbert enjoyed hunting, being outdoors, and especially his family.
His survivors include his wife Margaret of Amsterdam; four sons and their wives, Gary and Nadine of Amsterdam, Michael and Monica of DeWitt, MI, Dennis and Sally of Hendersonville, NC, Martin and Jeannie of New London, NC; four sisters, Erlene Moussaw of Hailesboro, and Mary McClure, Joan Sheen, and Kay Perry, all of Gouverneur. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Mr. Conklin is predeceased by his brother, Francis Conklin and a sister, Margaret Bresett.
