Obituary of Alfred J. Liggero

Alfred ?Cooksie? Liggero, 90, of New Street, passed away peacefully Monday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility. Born in Amsterdam Oct. 21, 1920, the last surviving child of the late Nicholas and Maria Grazia Petrucelli Liggero, he was a lifelong resident, and attended local schools. He entered the US Army on January 2, 1943 and served as a private first class in the Pacific Theater of Operations in the 235th Engineer Combat Battalion. Following his honorable discharge in 1945, Fred worked at the Liggero Brothers Petroleum Gas Station and later for the US Postal Service in Amsterdam from 1977 until he retired in 1988. He was an active parishioner of Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church where he was on both the bingo and cemetery committees , and chaired the spaghetti dinners for many years. A member of the Southside Veterans he was also an avid bocce player. Fred was a certified basketball official and was also proud to attend the Olympics in both Lake Placid and Sarajevo. He remained active and vital until recently and had a great sense of humor. He will be truly missed. On November 17, 1941 he was united in marriage to the former Helen Mitchell. After nearly sixty three years of marriage she passed away on June 25, 2004. His brothers, Pat, Larry, John, Albert and Ernest Liggero and sisters Amelia Cassella and Ceil Quini also predeceased him. He is survived by two sisters in law, Nellie Liggero and Mary Paoletta and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews. A Mass Of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday at 11:15 am at Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church. Fr. Lawrence J. Decker, celebrant. Interment will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery with military honors. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Wednesday from 5-7 pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. It was Fred?s wish that contributions be made in his memory to either Mt. Carmel Memorial Fund or the Cemetery Fund , both in care of the funeral home office.
