Obituary of Genevieve A. Gutowski
Genevieve A. Gutowski 97, formerly of Woodrow Road, passed away peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born in Amsterdam on Feb. 10, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sophie Kyras Stankevich. Educated locally, she also attended the Amsterdam School Of Commerce. After a short employment in a government office in Washington, she returned to Amsterdam to work at the Amsterdam City Hall. In 1956 Gen began a long career as office manager for the former Mortan's Clothing Store. She retired in 1981.
Proud of her Lithuanian heritage, Gen was a lifelong parishioner of the former St. Casimir's R.C. Church, and more recently of St. Mary's. She kept her home meticulously, was a gifted baker, a skilled knitter and will always be remembered as a gentle and kind wife, mother and grandmother.
Her husband, Henry Gutowski predeceased her on Sept. 11, 1997. She also lost her daughter Mary Ann Sypien in 1984.
Her loving family includes her son Michael and his wife Shelley Gutowski of Westfield, Mass., her daughter Margaret and her husband Michael Marletta of Berkeley, Ca., her sister Helen Gavry of Amsterdam; grandchildren, Paul and Mark Sypien, Kari Crowley, Kyle Wojtowicz and Matthew Marletta; great grandchildren, Connor, Emma and Piper Crowley; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Mass Of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 9:15 am at St. Mary's Church, 156 East Main Street, by Fr. John Medwid. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Wednesday from 4-7 pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. Interment is in St. Casimir's Cemetery. Memorials may be made in her name to the Sanford Home for Women, in care of the funeral home office.
