Obituary of Richard P. Tatar
Richard P. Tatar, of Palm Desert, California passed away on August 14, 2011 at the age of 89. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 23, 1922, the son of Fred and Dora Tatar. At the age of 13, the family moved to Philadelphia, where he attended Northeast High School, and then furthered his education at University of Pennsylvania, where he was a graduate of the Wharton School of Business. The family moved to Gloversville, NY while he was in school, and Richard joined the US Air Force, where he trained to be a pilot and achieved the rank of sergeant. Returning to Gloversville after the war, he joined his father and brother Milton in running Daytona Glove Co, a family business. He met his lifelong love, Sonya, and they were married on October 23, 1949, spending 62 years together. He is survived by his wife, Sonya, a son, Neil and his wife Linda of Queensbury, NY and a daughter, Linda Landau and her husband Mark of Scottsdale, Arizona. In addition, he has four grandsons, Benjamin Tatar of Queensbury, NY, Daniel Tatar of Boston, MA,. David Landau and his wife Jennifer of Los Angeles, CA.and Derek Landau of Hoboken, NJ. He is also survived by his brother, Harold, of San Francisco, CA. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and was always very proud and supportive of his family.
Richard was a very civic minded member of his community. He served on the Board of Directors of City National Bank for 25 years, and was also an honorary lifetime Board member, served on the Board of Directors of Nathan Littauer Hospital, where he was instrumental in raising the necessary funds for the building of a new hospital, and served for many years on the Board of Knesseth Israel Synagogue, where he was proud of the fact that his grandfather served as the first Rabbi. He also served as a Director of the Jewish Community Center. He was a true philanthropist and humanitarian, living by the philosophy that the best way to donate is anonymously, and he chose to support many charitable causes in this manner.
A successful businessman, he developed a line of vinyl products that ultimately repositioned Daytona Corp into a heat sealing and imprinting company, and the Company grew under his leadership. He also held the position of Executive Vice President of Amsterdam Printing and Litho for many years. He loved to play golf and to travel, visiting various countries in Europe each year, and was especially fond of his vacations to Capri with Sonya. He supported the arts and acquired many fine pieces, often from artists who became friends. He enjoyed many years of retirement with Sonya at their home in Palm Desert, CA.
Funeral Services will be held at Knesseth Israel Synagogue in Gloversville on Friday, August 19th at 2:30 pm. with Rabbi Rose Durbin officiating. Interment will take place at Knesseth Israel Cemetery, Gloversville.
