Obituary of Andrew M. Hall

Andy was adored by his Liberty ARC staff for the three decades that he was supported by the agency, and deeply loved by his family, especially his brother, Alan Hall. In memory of Andy, Alan wrote this touching message on his beloved brother and the staff at Liberty ARC that cared for him. 

“As we remember our beloved brother Andy, I think how blessed we are as a family to have had him as a brother. I want to say a big thank you to Liberty ARC for caring for Andy for the last 30 plus years.

I have known Liberty ARC and many of the staff since way back in the 90’s when I and the kids would go to visit mom and dad on the farm during the summer months. We would have a big BBQ on our farm with 30 plus special needs people and staff. I remember helping many of them with their fishing poles and then moving on to help with the grill. Those were fun times.

Each and every staff member there is special. Working with special needs adults is hard, physically and emotionally. I was always struck by the fact that every single time we talked to a staff member, they were very warm and friendly. They spoke with genuine care for Andy and the other residents. 

When Andy was able to visit [me] four to five times during the year he traveled by plane and never ever did I have any issues with Liberty ARC staff not being able to take Andy to the Albany airport. This was no small task as it was at least a 3 ½ hours between driving back and forth to the airport and waiting with Andy till the plane took off. Then I would meet him on the other side. Then reverse the process for his return trip. I know for a fact that staff members took him to the airport on their days off.

Also, I would have weekly calls with Andy and often he and others would be out for ice cream or they would have taken Andy out shopping which he loved to do. I remember another time Andy was all worked up about something and staff took Andy for a 3 hour drive until he calmed down. Staff would have Andy set the table, assist in making his own lunch, and have him help with his laundry (he loved to help fold his laundry.)

What I am getting at is that Andy lived a productive, happy life because Liberty ARC helped him do so. Just like his family would.

But Mom and Dad did not do this alone, as the whole family helped with Andy’s needs. The sisters trained Andy to crawl. They spent countless hours with Andy on his tummy, moving his arms and legs in a crawling motion. That is why Andy was so coordinated in his ability to do things like ride bikes, mow the grass with both a push and riding mower, drive a golf cart, and boy did he love to drive the cart!

As I cared for Andy over the years and had him stay at our house he was such a joy to have. He loved to color with his head phones on listening to classical music. We would play golf and go bowling. The video I have of Andy getting a strike is truly Andy loving life.

He loved going for rides in my Cobra. He called it the “fas car, fas car.” I took Andy to Poolesville Day back in 2012. I have a picture of Andy and me driving the Cobra in the parade, with rows of people lining the street. He loved attention and he was in his glory! Andy was so happy being part of our lives and we loved having him.

I remember at times when I would tease Andy he would respond with, “Al, Stop it” and laugh. He is a special brother that touched all of our hearts.”

Services for Andy will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at 12pm with Rev. Cynthia Leonard, with a calling hour beginning at 11am at Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Home. Andy will be buried with his parents at St. Gabriel's Catholic Cemetery, Potomac, Maryland.
