Obituary of Dorothy Putman

Dorothy Ellen Palmer Putman passed away peacefully December 27th at River Ridge Living Center in Amsterdam, NY at the age of 94 after a brief illness. Born August 3, 1929 to Alton and Lena Palmer in Amsterdam. she grew up in Amsterdam and Galway Lake, graduating in 1948 from the former Galway High School. She went on to graduate from the Albany School for Practical Nursing in 1951 and worked at Amsterdam City Hospital and Montgomery County Infirmary for many years, retiring from there in 1994.

On May 28, 1955, she married Harold C. Putman, who predeceased her on March 10, 2001. Together, they enjoyed travelling in their motorhome, visiting many states to include a United States cross country trip to Alaska in 1995.

Dorothy was active in 4H for many years serving as a leader and on the board of directors. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau, Senior Citizen Chorus of Gloversville, and The Betty Green Memorial Chorus. Dorothy enjoyed sewing, reading, puzzles, bingo and was known to drive for hours to watch a good parade.

In addition to her husband and parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her grandson Daniel McCabe in 2007; brother James Palmer in 2008; son-in-law James (Jim Bob) Kollar in 2017; and grandson Peter Nellis in 2019.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Martha (Stephen) Nellis of Fort Plain, NY; Linda Kollar of Johnstown, NY; Roger (Lorna) Putman of Johnstown, NY; Donna (Gary) McCabe of Wellesley, MA; and Charles (Theresa) Putman of Whitehall, NY. Sisters Marion (Betty) Cuckoo and Shirley Vosburgh; and brother Edward (Bobbe) Palmer. Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; cousins; nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at River Ridge, especially the staff on “A” wing.

Family and friends are invited, and may call on Saturday, December 30th from 10:00 in the morning until noon at Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St, Gloversville, NY with Dr. Doug Blanc officiating a funeral service at noon. A graveside service will be held in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.
