Obituary of Francis G. DeRosa
Francis G. “Frank” DeRosa, 84 of Johnstown passed away peacefully on the early morning of November 30, 2023 at the Wells Nursing Home in Johnstown.
He was born April 17, 1939, in Gloversville, the son of Anthony and Esther (Travaglione) DeRosa. In 1965 he married Michelina “Lena” Malagisi. They were married for 55 years before her passing in 2020. He served in the US Army and traveled abroad.
In 1965 he was employed by the Gloversville Federal Savings and Loan Association. He spent 28 years there; first as a teller, head of the savings department and then head of the student loan department. In 1975 he was promoted to assistant treasurer and in 1977 he became the corporate treasurer/CFO. Frank remained in that position until his retirement in 1993.
He completed many courses through the American Savings and Loan Institution and was a member of various local financial organizations. He was President of the Capital District Chapter 131 of the Savings and Loan Institute and upon his retirement was treasurer of the Savings Forum for Auditors and Comptrollers, Upstate Division and Trustee for the Capital District Savings and Loan League. He held the position of Secretary/Treasurer of the New York State Forum for Operations, Audit and Control. He was instrumental in organizing, as well as the development and building of the Gloversville Federal Savings and Loan Branch in Saratoga Springs, now owned by NBT.
After retirement he took a brief position as the Branch Manager of Albany Savings Bank in Johnstown and was a board member of the First Choice Financial Credit Union for many years.
He was a lifetime member of the Concordia Club and The Knights of Columbus. In 2014 he became a 4th Degree Knight and held the position of Financial Secretary for the organization. He helped raise $750,000 toward the Martyr Shrine in Auriesville through the Knights of Columbus.
He was an active member of Holy Trinity Church in Johnstown and served on the parish counsel, finance committee and performed duties as the trustee beginning in 1998.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is also predeceased by his sister, Angel Graziano, a nice Christine (Graziano) Parker and many aunts and uncles.
Frank is survived by his daughter Esther Carpenter, her husband Tim and their children: Andrew, John and Michael, Elizabeth (Beth) DeRosa, a son Anthony (Tony) DeRosa, his wife Katie and their children: Gianna, Francesca, Anthony and Sophia. He also leaves behind a cousin who was like a sister, Ann Sicilia and her husband Leo as well as special friends Sally Malagisi and John Pavlus.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Wells Nursing Home for the dedication, care, and compassion they have shown their dad while he was a resident there.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 9-11 am on Saturday, December 9th at Betz, Rossi, Bellinger and Stewart Family Funeral Homes, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville. A Con-Celebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon at Holy Trinity Church, 205 Glebe Street, Johnstown, with the Rev. Matthew Wetsel and the Rev. Michael Cambi. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Wells Nursing Home in Johnstown.
