Obituary of Mary (DiCaprio) Donato

Mary (DiCaprio) Donato, 98, passed away peacefully at Wilkinson Health Care Center, on November 3, with her family at her side.  She was born in Amsterdam, one of 13 children to the late Alfred and Pauline (Coluni) DiCaprio. She was predeceased by her brothers Carmine, Peter, Nicholas, John, Joseph, sisters Maria DiCaprio, Julia Martini, Jean D’Alessandro, Nancy Gentile, Madeline Gentile, Joanne Hall.

She attended Amsterdam Schools and left school in the 10th grade to help support her family on the DiCaprio Vegetable Farm in Fort Hunter (“Yankee Hill”).   She worked in various jobs while raising her family. Mary loved bowling and was in four leagues in Amsterdam, before moving to Florida in 1966, where she continued in her love of bowling. Her longevity contributed to many things, hard work, spunk, wit, telling it like it is and her “Mannies” (Manhattans) on Sundays before her pasta dinner. She was deep in her faith and loved to watch Mother Angelica on EWTN. One of her many talents were the hand sewed Christmas Stockings she made which showed her love for all her family and friends.

Mary is survived by her brother Alfred (Mary Doris) DiCaprio and sister-in-law Terry DiCaprio. Her daughters Joana Benson, Mary (John) Sidlauskas, and Ann Marie (James) Rodgers.  Her grandchildren Lisa Schultz, Floyd (Amy) Benson, James Rodgers Jr., Taylor (Ryan) Thomas,  great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Services will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated with the Very Reverend O. Robert DeMartinis E.V. officiating.  The Rite of Committal will be held at St. Michael’s Cemetery Chapel, immediately following the Mass.     Special thanks to the staff at Wilkinson Health Care Center for their loving care of Mom.
