Obituary of Walter Casabonne
Mr. Walter Casabonne, 92, of Amsterdam, passed away on Friday September 15, 2023 at his home with his loving family at his side.
Walter was born on April 5, 1931, a son of the late John R. and Emily A. Kaczor Casabonne. He was a lifelong Amsterdam resident and attended Amsterdam Schools. He went on to attend Military College in Norwich, Vt.
He served in the US Air Force during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954. He was stationed in North Africa, Morocco and various European Countries over the years. Following his active-duty service, he went on to work as an Avionics Superintendent at the NY Air National Guard/Samual Stratton Airbase with the 109th Tactical Airlift Group. He was there until his retirement as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1985, which is the Highest Rank in the Air Force. During his career he flew many missions to Greenland as part of the National Science Foundation. He was a volunteer at the Shrine of the North American Martyrs at Auriesville and was the caretaker for many years of the Priests graves that are buried on the grounds.
He was a communicant of Historic St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam.
Walt enjoyed traveling and "wintering" in Cocoa Beach Florida. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid sports fan of Amsterdam High School Sports and followed his grandchildren to attend their sports games.
He married Dorothy Stark Casabonne in 1957. She passed away in 1998. Survivors include his dear daughters, Donna Nasadoski and Terry (Mike) Casabonne, both of Amsterdam. Cherished grandchildren, Jennifer (Brian Dixon) Nasadoski , L.J.(Amanda) Nasadoski III, and Paul F. (Nicole) Furman. Great grandchildren, Layla Furman, Asher Knoppe and Maximus Furman. He also leaves behind his nurse and personal caregiver over the past 7 years, Tina Bernardo. Nieces and nephews also survive. Walt is predeceased by his wife Dorothy, his beloved son Daniel J. Casabonne who passed away on January 24, 2009, and his son-in-law, L.J. Nasadoski Jr. on December 18, 2018.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday September 22, 2023 at 11:00AM at the Historic St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, East Main St., Amsterdam NY with Father Nate Resila as celebrant. Private entombment will be held at the convenience of the family.
