Obituary of Eleanor E. Bonfey

Mrs. Eleanor E. “Sally” Bonfey, 93, of Gloversville, NY died peacefully on Sunday, August 27, 2023 with her family by her side.  Born on December 5, 1929 she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Mildred Button Walters.   

A lifelong area resident, Sally was a graduate of Broadalbin- Perth High School. She worked for various leather manufacturers, retiring from Papa’s Glove Factory as a Pk sewer.  

On December 7, 1952 she was united in marriage to her sweetheart, Charles F. “Chuck” Bonfey.  That union was blessed with 65 years of marriage until his passing on September 1, 2017.  She was also predeceased by her sister, Irene “Betty” Fisher; and her nephew, Joel Fish and his wife Susan.  

Sally enjoyed spending time with family, watching soap operas, and loved helping her parents on the farm, spending weekends at the camp at Piseco and fishing for bullheads in the dark.  She would watch the world go by from her chair on the front porch, and especially enjoyed spending time with her twin great grandsons Andrew and William.  

Survivors include her two children, Gail Cross of Johnstown, NY and Mark Bonfey and his husband Darren Darrah of Willsboro, NY; one granddaughter, Shelley Anne Waterman of Rome, NY; two twin great grandsons, William and Andrew Waterman; nieces, nephews and cousins. 

A Graveside Service of Remembrance will take place on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 11a.m. at Ferndale Cemetery in Johnstown, NY. 

All are invited to attend.  

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the North Main Street Methodist Church, 316, N. Main Street, Gloversville, NY 12078 where she was a member for 71 years or the Bleecker Street Church of Christ, 97 Bleecker Street, Gloversville, NY 12078.
