Obituary of Dora Torres Camacho

Mrs. Dora Torres Camacho, 85, of Amsterdam, passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at the E.L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam with her loving family at her side.

She was born in Yauco, Puerto Rico on July 12, 1938, the daughter of the late Felix and Alicia Pacheco Torres. She attended schools in Puerto Rico and moved to Amsterdam in 1956.

She was employed for many years for the Fownes Bros. Glove Company, Bojud Knitting Mills, Coleco Industries and lastly retiring from Ward Products, all in Amsterdam. Dora also helped with her family's business alongside her sons at the former "Camacho's Spanish Restaurant and Take Out" in Amsterdam.

Dora was very active in the community and was a communicant of the former St. Michael the Archangel Church, Historic St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church all in Amsterdam. She also supported the Spanish American Club along with her husband Ramon, who was a member and former president.

Dora enjoyed cooking for her family and friends while hosting many gatherings at her home in the "Garage". Her family was her everything.

Dora married Ramon "Ray" Camacho Jr., on November 5th, 1957. He passed away on May 8, 2022. She is survived by her three children, Norberto Camacho (Linda), Yvette Camacho Sousa and Rafael Camacho, all of Amsterdam, NY. Cherished grandchildren, Orlando, Yari, Amanda, Elissa, Tara and Jose Jr. Her great-grandchildren, Kaylen, Elyas, Kara, Malia, Kenley, Jeremy, Elliana and Lessia. Her brothers and sisters, Ramon "Chico" Torres (Carmen) of Ohio, Emilia “Linda” Valencia (Gilberto) of Columbia and Felix Torres Jr. (Anna) of Florida. Nieces, nephews, cousins, and God children.

She was predeceased by her son, Ivan Camacho on January 18, 2014, her brother, Porfirio “Pucho” in 1973 and sister, Sara Torres Serrano in 2022.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 21, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, 39 St. John St., Amsterdam with The Very Rev. O. Robert DeMartinis E.V. as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Amsterdam. Calling hours are Friday July 21, 2023, prior to the funeral mass from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Mt.
