Obituary of Shirley Ann Lair
Shirley Ann Lair, age 82, passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2023 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam.
She was born August 1, 1940 in Gloversville, the daughter of the late Gordon and Mary (Sullivan) Almy. She was a lifelong resident of Fulton County and lived at Palatine Nursing Home for the past several months. She was employed as a glove maker at St. Thomas Leather and worked on flyers for the The Leader Herald newspaper.
Shirley enjoyed walking through her neighborhood to take in the sights and visit with friends. She enjoyed board games, weekly card nights, and casino trips with her friends and family. When her children were young, Shirley often volunteered as a chaperone for school events and was loved by the many students who knew her. She became a fantastic golfer in her later years, discovering a natural talent and affinity for the game.
Shirley was a die-hard New York Yankees fan and shared her love for the team with anyone who would listen. She was known to crack jokes (good or bad) and always had a smile on her face. She was adored by many, and she will be missed.
Shirley is survived by her two daughters, Tammy Thackrah of Johnstown and Kathy Markarian (Christine) of Corunna, Michigan; her loving grandson, Ryan Thackrah, who was the light and joy of her life; four sisters: Helen Clayburn, Anna May Yost, Patricia Mabile and Diane Talmadge; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and close friends.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Harold E. “Skip” Lair Jr; as well as her siblings, John Almy, Gordon Almy, Francis Almy, Frederick Almy, Mary Colabello, Marjorie Bastian and Kathleen Hale.
In keeping with Shirley’s wishes, there will be no formal calling hours or funeral services.
