Obituary of Doris M. Schafer
Tribes Hill- Doris M. Schafer, RN, 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at River Ridge Living Center.
Doris was born on July 19, 1930, in Gloversville, NY, daughter of the late Abram J. and Mildred Naumann Martin of Mayfield.
She graduated from Mayfield Central School in 1947, and Amsterdam City Hospital School of nursing in 1950. Mrs. Schafer was a registered nurse on the staff of Amsterdam City Hospital, and later at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital. In 1966, she was employed by the Dept. of Motor Vehicles, Fonda, retiring in 1986.
She married Norman C. Schafer of Tribes Hill on June 2, 1965, who predeceased her on September12, 1990.
Doris was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Amsterdam, faithful follower bible class, Amsterdam City Hospital alumnae association and Tribes Hill Iroquois Senior. A former member of the Mohawk Valley Heritage association, Board of Director of the Walter Elwood Museum, Amsterdam Library festival of trees committee and Sir William Johnson Seniors.
Doris is survived by two daughters, Christine Murray of Malta and Sheree Schreckenberger (David) of St. Charles, KY; a sister, Shirley Kuhn (Bryant) of Johnstown; grandchildren, Jeremy Murray of New Jersey, Katie Andrews (Thomas) of Evan, GA; great granddaughters, Saylor Beth and Scarlett Mae Andrews; her best friend, Jack Murray; nieces and nephews. Doris is also predeceased by her brother, Jack Martin.
A funeral service for Doris will be held on Monday, April 17, 2023, at 11am with a calling hour prior starting at 10am with Rev. Dr. John A. Califano presiding at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
