Obituary of Phyllis K. Hampson
Phyllis K. Hampson, 73, from Galway NY, died Tuesday February 7, 2023 at Saratoga Hospital. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her children, Laura Greco Hutto (Chad Hutto, of Florida), Melissa Greco Wimmers (David Wimmers, of North Carolina), and Raymond Hampson Jr. (Rikki Parks, of Galway NY).
She was born on May 3, 1949 to John & Diane Torani, predeceased. She was also predeceased by her husband, Raymond Hampson Sr. Besides her children, Phyllis is also survived by her brother, John Torani Jr., her sister Diane Mangam, her aunt who was like a sister, Maryanne, eight grandchildren: Gianna, Mallory, Cole, Emily, Jinae, Kennedy, Gabriel, Hannah, one great-granddaughter, Juliette, several cousins, nieces and nephews, many friends, neighbors and her two beloved cats.
She was graduate of Wilbur Lynch High School in Amsterdam, NY and employed at first and later a part-owner in her family’s business, Carpetland of Amsterdam and Saratoga Springs. Though she originally resided in Amsterdam, her love of Galway Lake brought her to the country. In her teens, if you saw her walking around the lake, you definitely saw her with her best friend, Lynn. When they weren’t walking, talking, smoking and laughing they were playing Scrabble. She was a vicious Scrabble player and earned the nickname “the Claw” because she could pull all 7 letters out of the bag with her perfectly manicured hand, in one grab. She was also a fantastic bowler and a member of the 600 Club at Windmill Lanes in Amsterdam. She loved craft fairs and cooking and thrifting and antiquing. She gifted her famous Christmas cookies year after year to her kids, friends, and the installers at Carpetland. Her home was the place everyone liked to stop by on a Saturday morning because you could always count on a cup of coffee and a slice of cake.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday February 12th, 2023 from 12:00 to 3:00P.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY.
