Obituary of Carol Louise Young

Carol Louise (Ekelund) Young, 69, of Amsterdam, New York, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2023 at Baptist Health Center for Nursing & Rehab after a long illness. She was born July 28, 1953 in Yonkers, New York to the late Gustaf and Theresa (Kempter) Ekelund. She was raised in Staten Island, New York, where she graduated from Tottenville High School, and relocated to Amsterdam, New York in 1980.   

Carol received her Associate's degree as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant from Maria College. She worked in her field at Easter Seals in Albany until she became disabled in 1997. She then was a resident and participant in programs run by Lexington Center in Gloversville for many years. 

Throughout her life, Carol enjoyed crafting, traveling, gardening, reading and bingo. She also enjoyed spending time with her family as often as she could. 

Aside from her parents, Gustaf and Theresa, Carol is pre-deceased by her daughter, Melissa Giventer Bentoski, her brother Gustaf Ekelund and her brother-in-law Larry Moran.   

She is survived by her sisters, Terri Moran of Glenville, NY, Mimi Ekelund of Staten Island, NY, Barbara Ekelund of Wilmington, NC, and Nancy Dolan of Wilmington, NC, as well as her brother-in-law Joseph Dolan and sister-in-law Susan Ekelund. She is also survived by nieces Carrie (Cera) Ekelund, Mara Holland, Kirsten (Matt) Ekelund, Caitlin (Josh) Finan, and Jennifer (Dylan) Sanderson, her grand-nephews Gunnar and Rowan Ekelund, and James Sanderson, her uncle, Donald Kempter of Lillian, Alabama, and by several cousins.

Memorial donations can be made to the Animal Protective Foundation, 53 Maple Ave, Schenectady, NY 12302. A Celebration of her Life will be held at a future date.
