Mr. Cinquanti was my HS choir teacher in 1993/1994. Matt was a dedicated teacher and he pushed us to become one of the best AHS choirs of all time. He decided early in the school year that we would compete in a singing competition. We spent the next 6 months working harder than ever before. Matt wanted us to have the experience and enjoy ourselves without any expectations of winning. The marching band, select band, and select choir rode in a couple Browns buses to Hershey Park PA April of 1994. When we arrived we were shocked to see all of the competitors dressed in matching robes, suits and dresses. 40 to 50 different schools from all over the USA. AHS select choir were chosen to go first. We walked into the auditorium with our black pants, white button up shirts and glittered purple bow ties. 3 judges sat in the seats while the rest of the room was empty. Mr. Cinquanti looked at us from behind the piano with that big beautiful smile and began to played our warm up song “Morning Glow” we sang our hearts out. After 4 more songs we left the stage and ran to the amusement park to enjoy the rest of the day. The following day was the awards ceremony. Everyone met in the stadium and like I said before, no pressure, no expectations. They started announcing the runner ups from 10th place and up. We honestly weren’t paying attention after they announced the 6th, 5th and 4th. We knew it wasn’t going to be Amsterdam HS. When they announced the first place they also grade you on excellence. The announcer says, “The winner of this years competition, receiving 1st place excellent is…Amsterdam High School!” We were shocked and overjoyed. Thank you Mr. Cinquanti for believing in us. I will never forget you and I will never forget that experience you helped us achieve. I’m sure you’re singing and playing with the angels now. You are an inspiration.

Matthew Cinquanti was one of the most talented musicians I ever knew. I witnessed him playing piano for a choir that was, as choirs will, going continually flat. Matthew mentally and musically transposed the piano music key after key so that the choir and the audience never knew anything was happening. 1 in more than a million pianists can do that. He was musically intelligent and superbly talented. Robert Kent Kyler

I worked with Matt for many years at the Barkley Elementary School and the McNulty Elementary School. There was no finer musical talent as a music teacher. Every musical production was performed to perfection. The students’ talents were all able to be showcased at every holiday time. I was most fortunate to have worked with Matt .
Matt and I developed a friendship over the years where he shared lots about his wonderful family, especially his mother. I felt sadness at learning of his passing, but joy knowing that I enjoyed special moments when his talents could be put on display for parents. I often told him he should have been on Broadway in NYC with such an incredible source of musical style.
Matt’s family needs to know that I will hold a special place in my heart for having known Matt and all that we shared.
May God have a special place for Matt where he will continue to shine.
Barbara Petersen
Former Principal of Barkley and McNulty Elementary Schools

It was fortunate of me to have had Matthew as a friend for nearly thirty eight years. Not only was he an artistic genius, but he was warm, compassionate, and maybe a little cantankerous at times, but his good side outweighed any flaws, as I believe he thought the same of me. I will miss our long conversations via the phone and our mini coffee and dinner gatherings. Matt was a devoted son and brother to his deceased Mother and beloved sister, Claudia. He loved all his siblings as well, and was proud of each and everyone of them for their multiple achievements. In turn, his family cared very much for their brother, their uncle, and their cousin as this devotion was shown by the warmth and love that surrounded him in the end. May you rest in eternal peace and never know pain again Matt. Thank you for being such a good friend. I will indeed miss you.

I’ve always said that there was no one who I loved to sing with more than Matt. He was a genius on the piano and could play in any style and any key at will. He was hysterically funny and immensely talented. I will always cherish those quirky by-gone days with Adirondack Players and the rare fun we all had singing and being directed by Matt.
