Karyl graduated from Mayfield Central School in 1960. She attended SUNY Albany where she received Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in English/Education with a minor in French. Karyl was an English teacher in the Galway Central School District for 30 years where she taught 7th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade until her retirement in June of 1996.
She was a dedicated and committed educator who believed in the potential of all of her students to succeed and strived to leave a positive impact on each and every one. In 2018, her former student, Bryan Salisbury, honored her by dedicating his first novel, The Blacksmith, to her.
