George was a great individual with a very big heart. He helped me out when other lawyers failed...and did so just as a favor. I will never forget that as long as I live. He also did so much for the Town of Caroga and many others. He was always looking to help others. I envied the relationship he had with Ruth. They loved each other deeply. He was a very lucky man. He lead a life that would make anyone proud. Vrooman road, Caroga Lake, and the world in general, lost a good one. But he left behind one impressive legacy. Rest In Peace my friend. Until we meet again.

I am dearly going to miss my friend, George. I have so many memories of him and almost all of them make me laugh. Our shared love of a good pun often left me speechless next to his quick wit. I loved discussing many complicated topics of our time with him because he was so well read on every side of a controversial subject. He was a wonderful cook even though he would never admit it and kept enough food in the freezer to last through an apocalypse. I was always astounded when he said he needed to go to the grocery store. He knew the best Amish farm to get bread, the best places to get fresh produce and just the right spot in the forest to find beautiful edible (for cooking) mushrooms. George loved steak and hamburgers, but I don’t know why he ever ordered them in a restaurant because they always came out “overcooked,” meaning “slightly brown” on the outside.
George loved to hold forth on his porch in the middle of a crowd of people, smoking a fine cigar and drinking a gin and tonic with maybe a few fireworks. In the winter when he was forced inside he spent hours around a roaring fire in his huge fireplace and often said he had everything in the world a man could want at his home on Caroga Lake. Despite that, losing Ruth was devastating for him. Theirs was a marriage that was magical and he adored her.
On the other hand, I adored him. I treasure our time digging up bulbs before the winter when he would tell me about some of the interesting cases he had as a lawyer and then some of his escapades as a younger man. I was so proud of him when he learned how to text and would send me pictures of the lake or flowers he found or birds in his trees. He always made me feel like a special friend even though I didn’t do anything to deserve it. I think he was the rare person who did that to a lot of people. Even our Yorkie loved George. Once she discovered a woodchuck around his woodshed and sprinted across the yard, up the porch steps, and without a thought jumped into the chair George was in and climbed up his body to rest on his head. She knew who would protect her if needed and it never occurred to her that George might not like dogs. This was a big bonding experience for them.
And then there’s the music. Always the music. He loved jazz and last summer actually sang a duet with the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Competition winner Lauren Talese when she was a guest at his home. I have never met anyone that loved jazz more or had a larger collection of jazz music both in recordings and sheet music. His collection should go in the Jazz Music Hall of Fame if there is such a place.
Thank you, George, for all you did to enrich Caroga Lake. Your legacy will live on in your beautiful children and grandchildren and all of the things you did to save Sherman’s, Caroga Lake and Gloversville. I am grateful to have had you in my life, my friend.
Love you always,
Judy Simon
(I’m sure I still can’t tell you how we are related.)

George will be greatly missed. We have wonderful memories of playing music for George, Ruth, and family/friends at Caroga Lake. I learned so much sitting with George these past few summers at concerts. He was an incredible resource of jazz history, inspiring! Sending George's family our deepest condolences. George and Ruth's legacy will live on in the Caroga Lake community through their generosity, love and commitment for the area, education, and music.

He taught me many lessons during my younger years, not only professionally but personally. 1986 - 2006 The first one million dollar verdict in Fulton County under your belt, and I certainly remember that party. Rest in peace boss. Many wonderful memories. Sophie and Bobby I am so terribly sorry for your loss, may your memories help you through this difficult time. He is once again dancing with your Mom.
