Obituary of Janice H. Vertucci

Janice H. Vertucci, age 94, of Johnstown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility, Amsterdam, NY, where she received skilled and loving care from the Wilkinson staff and the Community Hospice of Amsterdam.  
She was born May 9, 1927 in Gloversville, the daughter of the late Frederick Sr. and Gladys Sanford Helwig.  She graduated from Gloversville High School in 1945 and then attended Oneonta State Teachers’ College. She was employed as private secretary to the Director of Cottage Hospital and Dean for Junior College in Santa Barbara, California, where she resided for three years. She was a secretary at the Gloversville YMCA. She umpired in the New York - Penn Class A Minors League Baseball. She later was District Coordinator for New York State Senator Hugh Farley of Johnstown, NY for 12 years. 
In 1951, Janice married Armand C. Vertucci, also from Gloversville. Ironically, they first met in the summer of 1950 when Janice had returned to Gloversville to visit family and Armand was visiting family while attending Harvard University Graduate School. They were married in Los Alamos, New Mexico, where Armand was Principal of the Los Alamos High School.  After three years in New Mexico, they returned East and lived in several communities in New York and Connecticut with their family of five children.  In 1981, Janice’s husband, Armand retired from education. They moved to Johnstown, with their son Mark who attended his Junior and Senior years at Johnstown High School. 
 Janice inspired friends and family with her dedication to family, church, and community.  She and Armand loved to travel and visited family in California, Washington, and Italy.  Janice was an active member in her community, activities ranged from being a Cub Scout Den Mother to being a member of Kingsboro Garden Club, League of Women Voters and P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization).  She enjoyed doing many Early American Crafts such as Early American tin and wall stenciling, quilting, making and dressing dolls.  
Janice was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Johnstown, where she served as Deacon.
She is survived by four children, Beth Sanford Vertucci of Brooklyn, Kurt Christopher Vertucci of Rome, Italy, Shelley Claire Vertucci of Seattle, Washington and Mark Charles Vertucci and his wife Lisa of Johnstown; two grandsons, Matteo Vertucci of Baltimore, MD and Marco Vertucci of Seattle, WA; a sister, Lois Lynch of Palm Desert, Californina; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Janice was predeceased by her husband, Armand C. Vertucci in 1996; a daughter, Susan Vertucci in 1968; and her brothers, Frederick Helwig Jr. and Rodger Helwig.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 3 to 6 pm Friday, December 10 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St, Gloversville, NY. Facial masks will be required. 
A Memorial Service will take place at 2pm on Sunday, December 12 at the First Presbyterian Church, 37 N. Market St; Johnstown, NY. Those who are unable to attend in person can join the service by Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86257029475
Interment will take place privately at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Community Hospice of Amsterdam, Fulton County Office for the Aging Meals on Wheels Program or Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility.
