Sam was a mentor to me in my first job out of college, as a news reporter/anchor at WCSS in the mid-1980s. We got to know each other while covering meetings and events, and when his Gazette colleagues ignored his (many) news tips, he started giving them to me :) For years, we would talk on the phone every day, without fail, when I finished my morning newscasts, and have breakfast together every Friday, discussing local news and politics, our families, and more. I learned so much from him! I hadn't spoken to Sam in many years, but have such fond memories of those times. He knew and was known, respected, and liked by everyone (and I mean everyone): abundantly loyal, fair and kind, and I loved his great sense of humor. I am so sorry for your loss but honored to have spent time with him. Please know his impact on my life will never be forgotten.

Mrs. Zurlo and family. Please accept my deepest condolences at the loss of your beloved Sam. I have many happy memories from when you were neighbors on Grand Street, visiting your home in Tribes Hill and so many conversations with my mom, Ann Moskal, who always enjoyed his radio program. He was a wonderful voice of the community and a true Amsterdam treasure. I pray for your comfort as you grieve…Joan Moskal Grasso

I was deeply saddened to hear of Sam’s passing. Every year I came to visit my mother I would call to see if we could get together to talk about “OLD TIMES” and what was going on in the present. Sam would always bring up the story about the DOLLAR BILL. My deepest condolences to the family. I will miss him.

Sam was one of amsterdams finest gentlemen. I remember always seeing Sam when I worked in dr. Berkmans dental office. He was the main man on main street!!!! I enjoyed being on the radio station with Sam. He always made me feel relaxed and we had alot of fun. Sam, Mike Mancini & Joe Isabel. They were the 3 best men of wcss. Oh and don't forget Bob going!!!!!
