Obituary of Luigi Greco
Mr. Luigi Greco, 97, of Amsterdam, formerly of Hagaman, NY, passed away on Tuesday October 19, at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Born in Amsterdam NY on April 13, 1924 a son of the late Joseph and Theresa Martuscello Greco. He was a lifelong area resident and attended Amsterdam schools.
Mr. Greco served during World War II in the US Navy. He had a distinguished military career. He was a Gunners Mate Second Class. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific theatre and the European-African theatre. He served aboard the USS Restless/Cornet, USS Drury, USS General T.H. Bliss and the USS Oklahoma City. While in the Navy he received on the job training as a machinist. He was very proud of his military accomplishments during World War II.
He was employed as a machinist for GE in Schenectady. Luigi was dedicated to his community here in Amsterdam and Hagaman.
He was a member of the Hagaman Volunteer Fire Department. He was a communicant of St. Stephen's Church in Hagaman, NY and served as an usher for the church. He was a member of the Domestic Violence Commission. Luigi enjoyed bowling, golfing and dancing. He was a handyman around his house and for his family and friends.
He married Helen S. Greco in 1982. She passed away in 2003.
Luigi is survived by his significant other for eighteen years, Mary Sinicropi Jobin of Amsterdam. His children, David (Mary) Greco of Greenville, S.C., Paula Merkt of Gloversville, NY, Bruce (Dawn) Steinberg of Vermont, Helen (Greg) Dado of Perth, NY, Joann Green of Virginia, Joseph (Kim) Kelly of Amsterdam and Guy (Coleen) Kelly of Amsterdam. . His sister, Sophia Sardonia of Amsterdam. His companion Mary Jobins’ Children, David (Dawn) Jobin of Amsterdam, Carol (Kevin) Mellon of Clearwater, Florida, and Richard (Pam) Jobin of Schenectady, NY. His grandaughter, Chancey Marie Rubin and great-grandson, Rylan August Rubin. Several other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was predeceased by his daughter, Theresa Ann Greco in 1973 and a brother, Carmen Greco.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday October 27, 2021 at 1:00 PM with Father O. Robert DeMartinis presiding. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 11:00AM to 1:00PM prior to the funeral service at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam. Interment with military honors will be in Hagaman Mills Cemetery, Hagaman, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephen's Church, 51 Pawling St., Hagaman, NY 12086 or the Hagaman Volunteer Fire Department, 126 S. Pawling St., Hagaman, NY 12086.
