Alfred Sanges

Obituary of Alfred J. Sanges

Alfred J. Sanges, 96, lifelong resident of Gloversville, passed away on Saturday, September 18, at his home.

Born August 2, 1925, Alfred was the son of Pasquale and Philomena DeMartine Sanges, and was one of 10 siblings. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Seabees, serving in World War II. He attended Endicott College, majoring in business. A golf lover from an early age, he started as a caddy and worked his way up to playing in numerous tournaments, accumulating a large collection of trophies and earning the nickname “Steady Freddie.” His favorite courses to play were Nick Stoner and Kingsboro golf courses. In his retirement, he enjoyed walking the courses for exercise, looking for lost golf balls to give new life to, and just genuinely loved being around the game.

Kind, loyal and generous are all words those close to him would use to describe Alfred, who went out of his way to care for others. Completely devoted to his late wife, Shirley Sanges, for almost 65 years, together they made a life full of laughter, good food and family above all else.

Their favorite place to visit was Wells Beach, Maine, where they brought their family to vacation for over 40 years. Making it a point to take trips with all of their children and grandchildren, everyone looked forward to the yearly vacations and many happy memories were made and will be cherished by all. A true Italian, Alfred enjoyed many family feasts over the years, but at the end of the day would always say, “the beer’s the best!”

Alfred is survived by daughter Deborah McCann (Wayne); son James Sanges; sister Delores Becker; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was predeceased by wife Shirley; son Richard Sanges (Lisa); brothers Mario, Renato, Herman, Loren, Albert; sisters Lucy, Marie, and Margaret; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private service will be held for immediate family only on Friday, September 24, at 11 a.m. Burial will take place in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville.  Please visit the online memorial at www.brbsfuneral.com
