We met Shirley in Venice,Florida through our friendship with her daughters, Karen and Linda. For two winter seasons, 2020 and 2021,I cared for Shirley in her home. My husband,Skip, and I became more than caregivers,we became like family. To describe the Papa women as gracious, would be an understatement. They treated us literally, like their family. Caring for Shirley was a priviledge and actually,so enjoyable. Shirley was an easygoing, lighthearted woman. She was full of positivity and encouragement. Everytime we walked through the door, she would say " Hi Sweetie" with the kindest heart...she smiled easily and laughed heartily.....more accurately, Shirley and I would belly laugh ourselves over the simplest stuff, usually something involving her care, like putting her support hose on or her earrings....I just loved the ease at which we went back and forth...even with her dimentia,Shirley didn't miss a trick. She alwayyyyss noticed what I had on and we would go over every detail with giddiness. Shirley was just simply fun. I called her my baby doll, she let me do anything, earrings, nails, hair, you name it,she just rolled with me! And another thing we loved to talk about was food. And if you know the Papa's,there was always plenty of it!!!!!!! We ate like kings and queens. Of course,Punkin Pie,as I called him,was another source of conversation for us....he was always there for every move we made...we gushed over that cat like 2 teenage girls. That was the key to our friendship, we were just open and simple. I could talk in such a forthright manner about any and ALLLLL topics! Nothing was off limits. I know more about those 2 girls than you would believe....no secrets,Shirley would tell all! We'd just laugh and shake our heads. Her love of her Hort was my favorite topic of conversation with Shirley. She made love sound so amazing. I was in awe of that kind of a once in a lifetime love....We also loved Jesus...Shirley and I read the Bible, sang Jesus songs ,and watched Christian TV shows every single day. We prayed for everyone and everything. Our days together were fulfilling ,fun, genuine and rich in love. I was blessed to be close to Shirley. She loved me,and she loved my husband,Skip. Like I said,we felt like her family.
We will hold dear the memories we built with Shirley,"Punkin Pie",Karen and Linda. They were fabulous!!!
We love you Shirl.....see you on the other side,
Love,Connie and Skip Smith

My memories of growing up will always have Shirley, Hort, and Linda and Karen in them. The best memories ever and Shirley and my Mom were always there.
I will miss you my sweet friend but I know you are where you longed to be. This picture of you and Mom will always remind me of how lucky I was to have you in my life. I hope you heard me when I asked you to kiss my Mama for me. I love you, Cat
